Pinstriped Pulse

By hitting two home runs in Monday’s win over the Rays, Juan Soto put together the 21st multi-homer game of his career. He’s now tied with Hall of Famer Eddie Mathews for the second-most all-time by a Major Leaguer at age 25 or younger, three behind the leader and another resident of Cooperstown, Mel Ott. Austin Wells, Anthony Volpe and DJ LeMahieu also went deep yesterday, giving the Yanks a season-high-tying five homers – their other five-homer game also took place against the Rays, on May 12 at Tropicana Field. Carlos Rodón struck out 10 batters Monday, matching his highest total as a Yankee and logging the 25th game of double-digit strikeouts in his 10 big league seasons. Yesterday was also the fourth time this year that the Yanks tallied at least 15 hits in a game.

How ‘Bout That

Saturday was a day that Carlos Narvaez will never forget! A cousin of Omar Narvaez, who played for the Mets last season and earlier this year, Carlos picked up his first hit in his first MLB at-bat, singling off Tampa Bay’s Kevin Kelly. He recorded more than 1,900 Minor League plate appearances prior to that hit, dating back to the beginning of a professional career that started in 2016. Behind Aaron Judge, Narvaez is tied with Oswaldo Cabrera as the second-longest tenured player in the Yankees organization; Cabrera also started his pro career in 2016.

Know The Foes

Currently in a Wild Card spot, the 51-48 Mets are part of a crowded picture in the National League where all teams except for Colorado and Miami are realistically in the mix to make the postseason as the trade deadline approaches. Francisco Lindor has been on fire since the middle of May, batting .311 with 30 extra-base hits and 14 stolen bases over his last 52 games, putting a slow start firmly in his rearview mirror. The 53-46 Red Sox are just two games beneath the postseason cutoff in the American League, although Boston has tied a season-worst by losing its first four games out of the All-Star break, which follows a stretch in which the team won 18 of its final 25 games prior to the break. Since the beginning of last season, Rafael Devers is batting .403 with nine home runs in 19 games against the Yankees.

Probable Starters

Luis Gil gets the call for the Yankees tonight after limiting Boston and Baltimore to a couple of runs over 12 2/3 innings combined in his final two starts before the All-Star break. The Mets will counter with Jose Quintana, who surrendered five runs in 5 2/3 innings to the Rockies on Sunday following a five-game stretch in which he posted an ERA of 0.89. Gerrit Cole went 12 innings with two runs allowed over his previous two starts against the Orioles and Rays. He’ll start tomorrow’s game opposite Sean Manaea. The Yankees’ pitching alignment for their next series against the Red Sox has not yet been announced.

Yankees Classics salutes Ben Rice

If you missed the action as it unfolded on July 6, check out YES and the YES App at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday for a new Yankees Classic: Ben Rice’s three-homer game. Relive the excitement from that Saturday afternoon at the Stadium, where Rice became the first rookie in the long, rich history of the Yankees to go deep three times as part of a 14-4 win over the Red Sox.

Jalen Wilson wins Summer League MVP

As the Nets went 3-2 in Summer League action, which the NBA concluded Monday, Jalen Wilson played so well that he won the league’s MVP Award! Having averaged 21.8 PPG, including a 33-point effort July 18 versus Orlando, while shooting 55.0 percent from beyond the arc, Wilson is the second Net to win MVP honors at Summer League. He joins Cam Thomas, who earned a share of the award in 2021. Wilson also made the All-Summer League Second Team, just as he did last summer.
